This talk will encompass our journey to use electrochromic technology to make walls that change colour from a mobile app. Our electrochromic materials change colour through an applied voltage bias < 3V, making it a safe low power draw system. The challenges associated with scaling the technology from laboratory samples to production trials will be addressed. It will be shown how ink choices and print methods affected device architecture. In addition the print sequence and ink compatibility for this multilayer device will be discussed.
The printed film is integrated onto a rigid PVC wall paneling. A microcontroller is integrated with the panel which controls the required electrical output to obtain a desired colour. It should be noted this technology does not emit light, but instead changes the base colour of the material via a reversible redox reaction
