The manufacturing of battery electrodes need to change. Conventional slurry mixing and coating techniques require the use of energy-intensive drying processes on a vast scale, resulting in huge capex and energy costs with significant carbon emissions. Many manufacturers and OEMs are moving towards dry coating as a way to cut costs and emissions. However, implementing dry coating at scale while maintaining battery performance is a huge challenge. The process needs to balance the right electrode material formulations, material properties and engineering constraints. In this talk we will present case studies that show techniques to improve the process for producing a composite electrode material for dry coating, while maximising cell performance. This improved process will help cell manufacturers harness the benefits of dry coating at scale.
